What do you do when your little one brings home pockets full of pinecones, acorns, and rocks? For us, the answer became something we lovingly call the nature bowl.
When my son was very young, he was constantly picking up little treasures on our walks — sticks, dried leaves, interesting stones, bits of bark, and the occasional feather. Like many nature-loving parents, I didn’t want to say no. I wanted to honor his curiosity and connection to the natural world, but I also didn’t want our house to turn into a cluttered forest floor.
So I grabbed a stainless steel mixing bowl from the kitchen and said, “Let’s keep them all in here.”
And just like that, the nature bowl was born.
What Is a Nature Bowl?
A nature bowl is exactly what it sounds like — a simple bowl or container where kids can collect and store their nature finds. It’s part display, part memory keeper, and part sensory play space.
Over time, our nature bowl filled with:
- Pinecones in every size
- Smooth and speckled stones
- Acorns (caps and all)
- Curled leaves and bark
- Tiny sticks with lichen or moss
- Feathers, dried flowers, and more
As the seasons changed, so did its contents. And so did my son.
Now almost six, he still adds treasures to his original bowl. He knows more and more about each item he’s collected, and asks thoughtful questions about where things come from and how they’re made. The nature bowl has quietly supported his learning, grounding, and sensory development — without screens, without effort, and without cost.
Why We Love Our Nature Bowl
- It nurtures curiosity and observation. Children begin to look more closely at their surroundings. Every stone is a new mystery.
- It invites storytelling. “Remember when we found this on the trail by the creek?”
- It offers a moment of calm. Touching, sorting, and admiring the bowl’s contents creates natural mindfulness.
- It’s a living record of childhood. As your child grows, so does the bowl — each item a memory.
- It requires no prep or purchases. It’s 100% child-led and nature-provided.
How to Start Your Own Nature Bowl
All you need is:
- A bowl, basket, or wooden tray (we started with a stainless steel mixing bowl!)
- A space to display or tuck it away
- An open invitation to collect (and yes, to eventually declutter)
Some families use separate bowls for different seasons or locations. Others let one bowl evolve over time — just like we did. Ours is now so full that Nature Bowl #2 is about to begin!
Let It Grow With Your Child
There’s no wrong way to use a nature bowl. You can:
- Sort items by texture or colour
- Take them out and draw or paint them
- Match them to nature guidebooks
- Create seasonal or solstice displays
- Simply enjoy the quiet ritual of adding something new
Most importantly, let it be their space. A nature bowl invites reverence without pressure — and that’s exactly the kind of parenting rhythm many of us are seeking.
Final Thoughts
Our nature bowl may have started as a place to collect sticks and pinecones, but it’s become so much more. It’s a symbol of slowing down, observing the world together, and celebrating a child’s wild and wonderful connection to nature.
As your family walks the path of gentle, nature-inspired parenting, a simple bowl of outdoor treasures might just become your favourite ritual too.
